Married Saint Of The Month: Blessed Giuseppe Tovini
Beatified in 1998, Giuseppe Tovini may not be a name that is familiar to readers. Giuseppe Antonio Tovini was born in 1841 into a devout family in far northern Italy, the eldest of seven children...
He progressed through school to university, where he chose to study the law. But before he finished his studies, his life took a more difficult turn, as first his father and then his mother died, leaving him to support his younger brothers and sisters...
Even though Giuseppe was busy with work and public activities, he and Emilia had a happy domestic life. He
made a point of writing letters to her whenever he had to be away from home. Their family steadily grew and
they welcomed ten children over the 22 years they were married. Emilia and Giuseppe ran a strict but loving household. They particularly believed that it was important to teach their children the faith and to pass on a strong work ethic. Although Giuseppe had high expectations of his children, he was known as patient and gentle father…
Giuseppe’s open involvement in both civic life and Catholic organizations at that time in Italy’s history
took courage. Anti-Catholic sentiment was strong during the period of Italy’s unification…
Describing Tovini at his beatification, Pope John Paul II said, “He was able to combine his vocation as husband and father of a family with his commitment to many Catholic initiatives.” Sometimes saints (rightfully)
stand out to us because the circumstances of their lives have been extraordinary. We might be surprised to
find that Giuseppe Tovini’s life, while very full, resulted in his beatification. Blessed Giuseppe Tovini shows us
that the virtues of integrity and courage can thrive even in the ordinary busyness of work and family life.

Healing & Reconciliation: Hallmarks of Retrouvaille Program
Retrouvaille began in 1977 as a French language weekend for hurting marriages in the province of Quebec, Canada. It was adapted to English by the community in Toronto, who also revised and strengthened the contents of the weekend and developed the post-weekend programs. Retrouvaille is Catholic in origin and has spread through the U.S.A., South America and into many other countries around the world. Couples
of all faiths and those with no faith tradition are welcome and encouraged to attend.
No attempt is made to convert anyone to a religion. Saving a marriage is our focus. The ultimate goal of Retrouvaille is solely to help save marriages.
The word Retrouvaille™ (pronounced retro-vi with a long i.) is a French word meaning rediscovery. The program offers tools needed to rediscover a loving marriage relationship. Thousands of couples headed
for cold, unloving relationships or divorce have successfully overcome their marriage problems by attending the program. The next upcoming Retrouvaille weekend is February 22-24, 2013.
The Goals of Retrouvaille
The primary goal is to provide help for couples who live in the disappointment and pain of a marriage problems. The weekend provides a safe setting encouraging couples to learn communication in marriage in a respectful manner. The post-weekend phase of the Retrouvaille program is as critical to a couple experiencing marital problems as the initial weekend experience. The degree of disappointment, deterioration and despair in hurting marriages cannot be healed in one weekend. Restoration takes time. The post-weekend sessions provide support as couples discuss concepts of the importance of communication in marriage, intimacy, and many other topics. Today's unchallenged acceptance of divorce suggests that
many friends, families, church communities are providing only limited support for marriages. Retrouvaille is a program that is solely dedicated to providing the necessary support to help save marriages.
The Retrouvaille Program consists of a weekend phase combined with a series of 6-12 post-weekend sessions over 3 months. It provides the tools to help put your marriage in order again and gives
couples and opportunity to rediscover each other and examine their lives together in a new and positive way.
Retrouvaille has a vision statement that sums up the work they do. “The unchallenged acceptance of divorce has infected our world with hopelessness, but we believe that every marriage deserves the opportunity to survive, be healed and thrive as a covenant of life and love. Retrouvaille is the place where we, as hurting couples, found hope and so we are passionately committed to dramatically increasing the number of couples served in both new and existing communities worldwide. Through the power of the Holy Spirit, we will use our talents and gifts to promote and spread the healing ministry of Retrouvaille.”

What to do on New Year's Eve?
Several blogs and a number of my friends on Facebook raised the question of what to do on New Year's Eve to celebrate it well as a Catholic family.
One person's lament bemoaned the fact that because of kids, New Year's Eve no longer holds any special interest because, well, they don't attend exciting parties every year like the good old days before children. While it is true that unless one decides to get a sitter or family member to watch the kids, the prospects of going out for a night on the town aren't promising once a kid or two (or a few) come along I don't think the fun of New Year's is gone for family life. Perhaps the "good old days" weren't really all that good after all?
I have discovered over the years that it's actually a lot more fun to party with my kids than a bunch of drunken revelers at a public party. We eat good food, play games and just enjoy time together. When possible we have extended family over too.
I've pretty much given up on trying to mark the midnight passing into the New Year by watching the Time's Square "ball drop". The TV coverage is just too nasty and vapid for family consumption. So we drink champagne to toast our own countdown and the kids drink sparkling cider and then we pray and go to bed.
I know that the holiday has passed, but I like to hear about how other families celebrate so that I can share it "pre-Christmas" next year for the enlightenment of us all.
Please post your traditions and ideas!

January 2013 - Good News newsletter
January 2013
Attn: pastors and lay leaders
This newsletter will be published monthly and is also available as a double-sided single sheet PDF file that may be printed and inserted into your parish bulletin or placed in the vestibule or other public place for distribution. We encourage you to contact us with questions and to submit relevant information to include in this newsletter.
New My House sharing cards are available starting in January to make it easy for priests and laypeople to spread the good news about this important healing work in our diocese. Brochures are also available for distribution.
My House Anti-Pornography Initiative Making New Progress
In 2007 Bishop Finn issued a pastoral letter on the issue of pornography titled, “Blessed are the Pure in Heart.” The letter provided both clear teaching on this issue and recommendations of what Catholics can do to help those who lives have been hurt by this epidemic. As a result, our diocese began the As For Me and My House initiative (also called My House) to protect families from pornography and provide resources for healing and recovery.
What does My House do/offer?
The My House Initiative offers sound, Catholic one-on-one counseling and group work for men and women struggling with the effects of pornography. It also helps families become aware of the dangers and educates on ways to keep pornography out of our homes.
What is your role?
My role as the therapist is to be the “gatekeeper” for the confidential groups by conducting an assessment on a potential group member. I also offer additional counseling services for the couple or the individual wife or husband.
What led you to do this work?
After struggling with this issue on my own and finding freedom through the My House Men’s Group conducted by Sam Meier through the Archdiocese of Kansas City, KS, a desire grew within me to help men and women struggling with this issue. I am in the process of obtaining professional training in the Sexual Addiction Treatment Program at Mid-American Nazarene University to more effectively help those seeking freedom.
What do we know about pornography’s effects on men and women?
The effects on the brain and psychology of a man can destroy his perception of an intimate, meaningful relationship. More and more wives call my office because of the traumatic effects (feeling of being cheated on) of the disclosure from their husbands due to their use of pornography.
How would you say to the skeptics out there who say a little porn is not a big deal?
I would ask them how their sex life is. There is a strong correlation between men who watch pornography and a decreased pleasure from sexual intercourse. Instead, more intense and sometimes violent pornography ends up being more pleasurable. This spirals into isolation and loneliness as the spouse is often left to the wayside.
Is there really hope for someone who wants to find freedom and healing from this?
A priest once told me, “There is always hope.” The freedom and healing from this is real through a spiritual and sound, psychological perspective. This initiative’s holistic view of the person is based on theology, psychology and science. There is always hope.
Michael Ciaccio, M.S., P.L.P.C., answers the My House helpline (816-808-6544) and offers private counseling as part of the My House initiative. He also offers counseling services including therapy for married couples and individuals. He is featured on the Catholictherapists.com website atwww.catholictherapists.com/ciaccio/.
Bishops Urge Catholics To Pray, Act in the New Year
The U.S. Catholic bishops have launched a pastoral strategy addressing critical life, marriage and religious liberty concerns. The five-part strategy or call to prayer was approved by the bishops in November and is set to begin after Christmas. Campaign components include monthly Eucharistic holy hours in cathedrals and parishes, daily family rosary, special Prayers of the Faithful at all Masses, fasting and abstinence on Fridays, and the second observance of a Fortnight for Freedom.
